BHX bolsters senior team as Chief Commercial Officer lands at the airport

Birmingham Airport (BHX) has announced the arrival of Matt Hazelwood as he joins the top team as Chief Commercial Officer, taking responsibility for all commercial strategies and revenue areas at the airport. Also joining the growing team in industry experience, Tobias Morter takes the position as Business & Travel Trade Executive.

Hazelwood’s extensive experience has been gained over decades in the aviation industry. Prior to joining BHX, Matt held the position of Chief Commercial Officer at AGS Airports Group, overseeing commercial activity across Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton Airports. Here he was successful in delivering £250m+ revenue at the largest regional airport group. Prior to that, comprehensive experience in airline growth was gained at EasyJet, Wizz and Norwegian Air. He has also held senior positions at Gatwick where he oversaw Airline Business Development delivering a 10m passenger increase over a 4-year period.

Speaking on the appointment, Matt Hazelwood said:

This strategy will see forecast passenger growth supported across the site by our airline partners, concessionaires and property portfolio, ensuring BHX continues to serve its regional catchment sustainably and effectively into the future.

“My remit brings together all commercial and revenue driving teams, including Airline Development, Commercial and Property. I am very much looking forward to working with all our partners, driving more growth and value for our passengers and people.”

Tobias Morter also joins the team as Business & Travel Trade Executive and will be the primary contact for airline sales teams, travel trade partners, including consolidators, consortiums, online travel agents, travel management companies, tour operators, and corporates.

Tobias has an extensive career in aviation with previous roles including commercial and operational roles at TUI, Qantas, and British Airways, with a strong emphasis on route performance, commercial strategy, and airport–airline collaboration.

Tobias will be instrumental in creating and delivering impactful trade marketing campaigns, events, and sales missions on behalf of Birmingham Airport's airline partners. Tobias will also be the main contact of the travel agent community ensuring they are up to date on the latest developments at the airport, such as new airlines, routes, retail offerings, and customer propositions.

Commenting on his new role Tobias said:

My focus will be on deepening engagement across the West Midlands travel market - including corporate travel buyers, travel management companies, the education sector, VFR travellers, and the wider travel trade - to ensure demand from across the region continues to support the growth and performance of Birmingham Airport’s operations.”
